When Barnes & Thornburg LLP opened its Chicago law office in 1994, it had three objectives: to add unique new practices by drawing from the large talent pool in the city, to assist our existing clients, and to develop a significant presence in the largest city in the Midwest.
From one attorney in 1994 to more than 80 today, Barnes & Thornburg LLP's Chicago office is following its strategic plan. In the competitive law firm world, lawyers are looking for something different - a collegial, democratic firm where they can service their clients better within the structure and backbone of a large firm while practicing in a mid-sized office environment. Barnes & Thornburg LLP strives to meet those goals at their offices in the new 48-story UBS Tower, facing Chicago's famed Civic Opera Building. The office has grown based on this premise, attracting senior lawyers from large Chicago firms bringing new clients and a broader perspective to the practice of law in the office.
The firm's Chicago office provides the full range of legal practices including intellectual property, labor and employment, life sciences, litigation, healthcare, corporate, real estate, environmental, employee benefits and ERISA, finance, insolvency and restructuring, estate planning and tax. We serve clients from Fortune 500 companies to individual and closely-held businesses. Many of our attorneys are frequent speakers and lecturers for professional and industry organizations as well as faculty members of universities and law schools.

In keeping with this pattern of growth, the firm merged in 2003 with the Chicago intellectual property firm of Lee, Mann, Smith, McWilliams, Sweeney & Ohlson, expanding its intellectual property practice to rank tenth in the nation among full-service law firms with more than 50 registered patent attorneys.
